Thank you for your interest in adopting a GSP!

Adoptions are simple: We match the dog to the family and the family to the dog.

  • ** Please note a virtual visit and in-person home visit is required to be approved.  We currently have a long waiting list of approved applicants for dogs.  Please ensure you are ready to go through the application process before submitting an application.

    • Before submitting your application, please read through our adoption process listed below.
    • Once your application is approved, it will be active for 2 years.
    • If you are already an approved adopter and are interested in any of the available dogs up for adoption, please email
    • If you live outside of Wisconsin or upper Michigan, please complete an application through your states GSP Rescue site first.  To find a GSP rescue in your area, visit National GSP Rescue (gspca.org)
    • If you don't see an available dog you are interested in and would like to submit an application for a future dog that may came into rescue, please click on the WGSPR Future Dog to submit a general application.
  • Here's our adoption process:

    1. Complete our online adoption application.

WGSPR will review your application and follow up with you via email or phone. WGSPR will conduct a veterinary reference check and background check. Applications will be processed as they come in.  The length of time for the adoption approval process can vary as it is dependent on the schedules and availability of our volunteers.  Please be patient through this process.

NOTE: It is WGSPR policy that any applicant that has current pets has an up-to-date heartworm test and give monthly heartworm preventative in order to be approved to adopt. If you pass the initial check...

    2. Receive a home visit from WGSPR at a jointly agreed date/time.

WGSPR will contact your family to set-up a home visit appointment. The home visit is a chance for WGSPR to get to know your family, your lifestyle, and answer any questions your family has about the breed, the adoption process and more. After the home visit, WGSPR will determine and notify your family if you are approved for adoption. If you are approved your application will be good for 2 years.  If declined, we will provide the reason we are not able to allow you to adopt from us. If you are approved...

    3. Connect with the family who is fostering the dog you are interested in.

WGSPR will put you in contact with the foster family to further discuss the GSP that you are interested in. Here is a great opportunity to ask questions of the family who knows the dog best. If you want to continue in the adoption process with this GSP...

    4. Schedule a Meet-and-Greet with the dog (& foster family).

Your family and the dog's foster family will set-up a Meet-and-Greet at a jointly agreed date/time. WGSPR requires your family, including your dog(s), as the potential adopters, to travel to the foster home for the Meet-and-Greet. At the meet-and-greet, the GSP and your family will determine if you're a good fit for each other.  All interested adopters will have the chance to meet the dog.

At this point, the foster family will also assess your family's match potential with this GSP. WGSPR foster families have the FINAL decision on the family that will adopt the GSP rescue. Considerations include initial online application, home visit, meet-and-greet and overall best fit and safety considerations for the GSP rescue. If you are not selected for the dog you applied for, we will continue to work with you to find the dog that is a perfect match for your family.

WGSPR strives for a perfect match between your family and the GSP. During the meet-and-greet, your family may realize that this GSP isn't a good fit. If you are still interested in GSPs, we encourage you to consider other GSPs available for adoption.

    5. Finalize adoption!

Finalization is an exciting time for your family and your dog. WGSPR will contact you to complete all the necessary paperwork, submit the adoption fee (more information below) and provide you with a welcome kit. Read more about welcoming your new GSP to the family!
