Great Saves & Letters Home! |
|
As our first priority to purebred GSPs will always be in Wisconsin shelters; periodically we have the resources to help OTHERS in need. On this page, we’d like to share some of their stories with you! And there are sooooo many! |

Great Saves! |

These pix of Miracle the night she got off transport! It was a long journey, and all the dogs were very afraid of PEOPLE! |

Lisa - I have to tell you a little story. That Sat after the van was loaded and I was sitting on the curb, sweating bullets and beat red waiting to get paperwork to start our journey back to MN and Buck was waiting for me as he was co- piloting the journey to Madison and riding shotgun. Anyway, as I was sitting there Buck walked over to me and put is head on my shoulder as if to say "thank-you" and I scratched his head and we bonded for a moment. Anyway, I didn't give it another thought because that is what I do - I save dogs and this was part of it. Later that day Robin called and said she would give a million dollars for that picture as a symbol of rescue. What rescue is, does and sometimes the only reward or thanks we get. Unfortunately that memory is only for those of us that were there or those who can envision the moment. Buck made a real impression on everyone and is one very sweet dog that deserves all the best. I mentioned to Jim that he had been hanging around hounds too long as he was pretty laid back for a pointer. Thank you for saving him. Babs ~ PuppyPorch Minneapolis, MN |

From a Rescue Transporter’s Point of View! |
|
We finally DID get that picture when Babs & Buck met again, along the road, another transport, 8/12/06 |
|
In Feb. ‘06, a fella in Harrison, Arkansas, was busted for neglect & abuse, etc. to 50-60+ hunting breed dogs, the majority of which, have been confiscated (some are still on that mountain); he then committed suicide. POINTERS FROM OZ jumped on the mission, & organized a transport for about 20 of these dogs. So with a teeny bit of money in the check book; living on a hope & a prayer; WGSPR’s Ingrid & Lisa drove in the rain to IL very early AM 3/10/06 to meet ILBDR’s transport & collect 2-GSP’s, 1-pointer momma (carrying her own 5-pack!), & 2-pointer pups. |

In the spring of 2007, we had an little emergency down in North Carolina brought to our attention, SEVEN puppies (approx. 3-4 mo old), and their momma dropped off in a high kill shelter, so we had to move fast! Momma went to another rescue, but no one stepped up to help seven babies; so with WGSPR foster resources waiting, & help from GSP National Rescue, MANY WONDERFUL transport volunteers and the queen of logistics, Sue West, herself ~ WGSPR brought the LUCKY SEVEN to WI and their new lives! What we heard was the owner of the mother and pups died, son too them, could not keep them all, so put them in the shelter, where they got parvo, and all ended up at two vet facilities in Greenville, NC. About a two-thousand dollars later in vet bills, all survived, were released, then got upper respiratory infections; once again more treatments, as WGSPR waited for official health/release certificates to move to WI. Then we got them as far as West Virginia and the weather turned ugly, so they all spent a week with Almost Heaven GSP Kennels, and when they finally made it to Wisconsin, all had to be altered, and brought up to date on shots, and ALL were adopted. We get to see all of them from time to time and they are simply BEAUTIFUL puppies! This was one great save and a true labor of love!
Thank you everyone! |
|
Buck came from Calhoun, KY. He was part of a confiscation of several dogs, all penned in a small area, no food, water, shelter, owner went to jail for his crack operation. We got Buck! The poor boy had to endure heartworm treatment, but got a GREAT home! |

Little lefty |

|
So the guy ends up with a blind in one eye puppy, his wife says “dog has to go”, and WGSPR went to get Lefty. Turned out to be juvie cataracts. To have surgery done asap would have been the thing, but expensive and a lifetime commitment. We felt it better to adopt him “as is”. And all week long my radio kept playing John Denver’s “Almost Heaven, West Virginia”, and the application of a lifetime came in specifically for THIS BOY! Carrie & her mother drove in winter from WV and took Lefty, now Jebediah home! Alls well, that ends well. |

|
I finally got to meet KY Angie! She has GSPs Gretta & Jake! What fun to get together, and celebrate the holidays in person! The dogs were not present, boohoo. |
|
There are PEOPLE, many, MANY, great people you meet along this rescue dog journey path, and Angie is one of those, for me. Angie lives in Kentucky; ‘yall know how much I hate those KY dog pounds, and how I try to grab KY dogs whenever we can….so anyhow, Angie ends up getting JAKE from GSP Rescue in MO, and we have known each other now maybe 5 years? She is one of my Kentucky connections and volunteers. Me and Angie could be “dangerous” together to save dogs in Kentucky...tehe |
|
Opening the mail and getting deliveries can sometimes be fun! And 5/08/09 was OUR day! |
|
Rebecca from shorthairs.net forum made this quilt with all of our rescue dogs pix on it, saying: |

Thank You Rebecca Anderson! |

Our rescue friend Patty Goodwin lost her battle with cancer June 1, 2009. Patty volunteered for IL Bird Dog Rescue, IL Shorthair Rescue and WGSPR to mention a few in her lifetime! She had five of her own pointers/GSPs at the time of her passing, who all stayed with family members approved by Patty. We grieve for a wonderful, courageous woman today. I will miss her funny emails, and sharing her challenges. Patty was instrumental in saving so many dogs as well as people in her lifetime, we will miss her for as long as we live. Rest in Peace Patty, we got you covered now. |

|
Our rescue friend Amy White passed away unexpectedly October 12, 2009 in IL. Amy helped saved GSPs and Pointers in IL, WI and abroad as they crossed her path. She helped carry several for WGSPR over the years. Amy was the mom to several pointers herself! We’ll miss Amy, and trust her journey home was a safe one. God must have had another plan. We’ll carry on best we know now Amy. Rest in peace. |

One mans trash is another man & woman’s TREASURE! We love you Gunner! |

Dear Ms. Lisa It’s been 3 years since I got lucky and found my forever home. Although my parents were skeptical about me at first (they were told I was afraid of men!) I settled right in. My dad was away the Saturday I was dropped off to these first time fosters and my mom had no idea what she was in for! Upon my arrival, I scoped out the yard, but my favorite part was inside the house. It was like I had been there before because I walked in and went right to the bedroom, jumped on the bed and was fast asleep within minutes. I couldn’t tell you if there were treats or toys all the way; all I could think about was that comfy bed!! On Sunday when my dad came home, he didn’t scare me a bit! All he cared about was the stupid name the shelter gave me, “STANLEY” which was not even close. Mom and dad were looking through a shorthaired calendar as I was asleep, this time on the couch, when my dad said the name “Gunner” and I figured I should see what he wanted since someone finally called me by my real name. Since that first weekend, I had my parents roped in…yup I may be dopey, but boy do they love me!! I have even cost them a small fortune. Within the first month I was at the vet what seems like once a week because I was having trouble with my poop! I even got a fun trip to the local ER vet because my poop liquid blood!! It’s been about a year since my last incident and you would think that I have saved my parents money and stress, but nope not me!! I love Dr. Jansen, she’s my personal vet and my mom swears we pay her salary! My mom’s favorite story is the day Dr. Jansen told her I may have bone cancer in my jaw. She was terrified, but when Dr. Jansen put me to sleep and looked in my mouth she was surprised to find a little green army guy and a piece of mulch embedded into the gum so deep that it was causing a lump to appear on my under jaw!!! I am really good at getting things stuck in my jowls; it’s kinda my secret hiding spot for good treats, but everything gets stuck in there! A few months after my arrival, my parents decided it would be a good idea to “foster” another shorthair…boy did they have another thing coming!! I was secretly hoping for a girlfriend, they brought in this young whipper snapper named Rockford (ha ha…what a dorky name so I call him Rocky) and to my surprise we were immediately best friends. I even shared my favorite pillow with him the first night! I felt bad for him; he didn’t have a real family so I took him under my wing and quickly showed him the ropes. It was only a couple of days at the house before Rocky was gone and I didn’t know why. I cried like a baby all day to find out he just went to the vet for surgery on his dew claws because they were like hooks! I thought I had lost my best friend, but I learned that if you whine enough your parents will give in. Yup my parents failed fostering 101 and 102! Dad says Rocky got to be my brother because he liked to hunt. You see, I would prefer to hang out on the couch with mom because those guns scare me! The funny thing is, I was even afraid of BIRDS…I know I’m a bird dog, but birds equal guns AND shock collars so I am good with the couch. Rocky and I are living the life in with our parents and can’t wait to have a fenced in yard. They keep promising us that we will get one especially now that dad is a Menomonee Falls Fire Fighter! Way to go dad! Well…gonna get going, boy I am tired and the couch is calling my name. I just wanted to let you know that we are doing well and THANK YOU for taking a chance on me and my parents!! Luv, Gunner |
"I wish Heaven had a phone so I could hear your voice again... I thought of you today, that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday, and the days before that too. I think of you in silence, and often speak your name. All I have is memories, and a picture in a frame. I miss you soooo much!!!!" |

There was still snow on the ground, when we saved 4 gsp liver puppies, gave 2 to IL Shorthair Rescue, & we found our 2 homes in WI. The other day I was driving to work and I’m always seeing this girl walk this gangly, liver shorthair at the same time every AM. So I finally stopped, and sure enuf, it’s Reggie, the liver pup with a cowlick on back of his neck, that breeder was gonna shoot for that defect. Reggie is right around a yr old! |
